Alba Vineyard

Vineyard in Transylvania Wine region
Alba Vineyard

The tradition of vine cultivation in the Alba vineyard area dates back to the time of Burebista, with historical accounts describing the Getae transporting wine on small horses to the Greek cities along the Euxine Pontus (Black Sea). During the Roman occupation, the Via Magna road connecting the fortresses of Apulum (Alba Iulia) to Napoca (Cluj) meandered along the Piatra Craivii massif. Communities along this route actively cultivated vines, and their viticultural legacy continues to thrive today. Alba’s vineyards now contribute to the vibrant winemaking landscape of the region while honoring centuries-old traditions.

Historical records from 1173 highlight the exceptional reputation of Transylvanian wines in the Duchy of Venice. These wines were highly valued and exempted from maximum price regulations, encouraging their trade. By 1293, demand for these wines was so high that Venice’s arsenal constructed 15 galleys to transport wines from the Carpathian lands.

The Alba vineyard, located in the western part of the region, spans plantations on the slopes of the Mures Valley between Geoagiu and Ampoi. Geographically, the vineyard lies between 46°00' (Vintu de Jos) and 46°14' (Stremt) north latitude. The climate is moderately continental, benefiting from the protective influence of the southern Apuseni Mountains, which shield the vineyard from cold currents and mists while preventing excessive summer heat. The long, sunny autumns in this microclimate promote substantial sugar accumulation in the grapes, creating ideal conditions for winemaking.

Alba’s vineyards cultivate a rich variety of white grapes, blending traditional Romanian varieties such as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, and Grasa de Cotnari, with internationally renowned varieties like Furmint, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris, Welschriesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. This diverse array not only reflects the region’s viticultural heritage but also produces wines that embody the unique terroir of Alba.
